Background of the Study
Skill mismatch, where the skills possessed by the workforce do not align with the requirements of available jobs, poses significant challenges to employment rates. In Ado Ekiti Local Government Area, Ekiti State, rapid technological evolution and shifting industrial demands have exacerbated this issue. Many job seekers find themselves inadequately prepared for emerging opportunities, while employers struggle to secure candidates with the required skill sets (Olajide, 2023). This misalignment leads to higher unemployment rates, underemployment, and reduced economic productivity. Educational institutions and vocational training programs are continuously evaluated for their effectiveness in bridging this gap (Adeyemi, 2024). This study examines the extent of skill mismatch in Ado Ekiti, its impact on employment rates, and the broader economic consequences. The research aims to identify intervention areas and recommend policies to enhance workforce readiness and reduce unemployment (Femi, 2025).

Statement of the Problem
Ado Ekiti faces persistent challenges due to skill mismatch, where the qualifications of job seekers do not meet labor market demands. This discrepancy has resulted in elevated unemployment and underemployment rates, negatively impacting economic productivity and growth (Olu, 2023). The gap between educational outputs and industry needs hinders effective human resource utilization, creating a critical problem that requires targeted interventions. This study seeks to explore the extent of skill mismatch and its effects on employment, providing insights for policy and educational reforms to better align workforce skills with market demands.

Objectives of the Study:

To assess the extent of skill mismatch in Ado Ekiti.

To evaluate the impact of skill mismatch on employment rates.

To propose strategies for aligning workforce skills with market demands.

Research Questions:

What is the extent of skill mismatch in Ado Ekiti?

How does skill mismatch affect employment rates?

What interventions can effectively bridge the skills gap?

Research Hypotheses:

H1: Skill mismatch significantly contributes to higher unemployment rates.

H2: The gap between education and market needs adversely affects employment.

H3: Targeted vocational training can reduce skill mismatch and improve employment rates.

Significance of the Study
This study is significant as it addresses the critical issue of skill mismatch and its effect on employment in Ado Ekiti. The findings will provide valuable insights for educational institutions and policymakers to develop targeted interventions, thereby enhancing workforce readiness and reducing unemployment (Ogunleye, 2025).

Scope and Limitations of the Study:
This study is limited to the investigation of skill mismatch and its impact on employment rates in Ado Ekiti Local Government Area, focusing solely on the alignment between workforce skills and labor market demands.

Definitions of Terms:

Skill Mismatch: A discrepancy between the skills of the workforce and job requirements.

Employment Rates: The proportion of the working-age population that is employed.

Ado Ekiti Local Government Area: The administrative region in Ekiti State where the study is conducted.
